Australian Group Races are the highest class of thoroughbred race in Australian racing. The most recognised group races in Australia are the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Golden slipper and WS Cox Plate, which are all Group 1 races.

Group races total over 540+ races each year which works out around 2-3% of total races held each season in Australia.

Group races are divided into 4 categories;
Group 1 - at least $250,000 prizemoney - 60+ races per season
Group 2 - at least $125,000 prizemoney - 80+ races per season
Group 3 - at least $75,000 prizemoney - 110+ races per season
Listed - at least $50,000 prizemoney - 280+ races per season

The Australian horse racing season runs from August to July each year and we have listed all the Group 1 and Group 2 races on the racing calendar.

The AJC Australian Oaks is a Group 1 race for three-year-old fillies that is held annually each April at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales. The race is run over the classic oaks distance of 2400 metres under set weight conditions.

The Australian Oaks is very popular and one of the most awaited races in the season. The criterion is very hard and the race is also very tough for the horses. Until 1955, the race was known as the Adrian Knox Stakes. Between 1922 and 1945, the race was run on a one mile track. From 1946 to 1955, the track length was increased by 400 metres, making the total race distance 2000 metres. After that, the distance was increased to 2400 metres, which is still in practice today.
